How to Pray for Your Spouse

We have entered into a season of flowers and chocolates. Couples line up at restaurants with their valentines. Showing love for one another fills the air. Did you know one of the best ways you can express love for your spouse is to pray for them? It may feel clunky at first and a little weird, but this truly can strengthen your relationship with your Creator and with your Spouse. Here are some prayers you can start

Prayers for Your Husband:

  1. Lord, help my husband speak in a way that builds others up instead of tearing them down (Ephesians 4:29).

  2. Lord, encourage my husband in his work to give it everything he’s got, working for You and not for human masters (Ephesians 6:7-8).

  3. Lord, help my husband act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly (Micah 6:8).

  4. Lord, help my husband focus on You and not conform to the ways of this world (Romans 12:1).

  5. Lord, help my husband delight in Your law and set aside time to meditate on Your word day and night (Psalm 1:2).

  6. Lord, help my husband love me as Christ loves the Church (Ephesians 5:25).

  7. Lord, give my husband the wisdom to bring up our children in Your discipline and instruction (Ephesians 6:4).

  8. Lord, help my husband lead our family well-physically, spiritually, and emotionally (Ephesians 5:22).

Prayers for Your Wife:

  1. Lord, help my wife speak with wisdom when conversing with others (Proverbs 31:26).

  2. Lord, help my wife live with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Ephesians 5:22-23).

  3. Lord, help my wife look to You for strength and to seek you always (1 Chronicles 16:11).

  4. Lord, sustain my wife as she serves our family (Proverbs 31:15).

  5. Lord, encourage my wife to give 100% to her work, as working for You, not for men (Colossians 3:23-34).

  6. Lord, help my wife care for the widows and orphans (Deuteronomy 10:18).

  7. Lord, create opportunities for my wife to teach our children about Your commandments (Deuteronomy 6:5-7).

  8. Lord, supply my wife’s needs-whether physically, spiritually, or emotionally (Philippians 4:19).

Not married yet? That’s okay-here’s how you can pray!

Prayers for Yourself:

  1. Lord, help me to rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16-17).

  2. Lord, help me show my parents respect (Ephesians 6:2-3).

  3. Lord, help me flee from the evil things in this world and instead pursue righteous, faith, love, and peace with a pure heart (2 Timothy 2:22).

  4. Lord, help me be kind to others and be teachable (2 Timothy 2:23).

  5. Lord, heal me when I feel brokenhearted; bind my wounds (Psalm 147:3).

  6. Lord, help me love others and forgive as You have forgiven me (Ephesians 4:32).

  7. Lord, help me remember to be thankful in all things (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

  8. Lord, help me to trust in You to provide for my needs (Philippians 4:6-7).

Prayers for Your Future Spouse:

  1. Lord, help my future spouse seek your Kingdom above all else and to live righteously (Matthew 6:33).

  2. Lord, help my future spouse set an example for other believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity (1 Timothy 4:12).

  3. Lord, focus my future spouse’s mind on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable (Philippians 4:8).

  4. Lord, help my future spouse put whatever they learn about You into practice (Philippians 4:9).

  5. Lord, give my future spouse close godly friendships, allowing iron to sharpen iron (Proverbs 27:17).

  6. Lord, help my future spouse learn to love like You love us (Philippians 1:9).

  7. Lord, help my future spouse be a peacemaker (Psalms 122:7).

  8. Lord, help my future spouse learn how to submit themselves to leadership (Ephesians 5:21).

We are called to pray and intercede on one another’s behalf (1 Timothy 2:1). Be intentional about praying for your spouse. Let your spouse know you are praying for them as an encouragement. And as you pray, watch and be thankful as you grow closer to the Lord AND to your spouse.

“Therefore, what God has joined together, let no man separate" (Mark 10:9).
